So, what is a literary work? Well, it’s what the author decides. Me, you, my friends, the newspapers, the committee for good literary taste may or may not like it; that’s not relevant, because art can be ugly and yet be art. A literary work can be political or not political, and yet be a literary work. Should literature be political? Hell, who cares? It is political if the author thus decides, and it isn’t if the author so wishes it.”

-
José Rodrigues dos Santos: Can Agatha Christie be political? | Books | guardian.co.uk

Today’s NY Times presents the diminutive Medea Benjamin, mouth agape, surrounded by concerned, regretful-looking official men. Medea is the very image of the out-of-control harridan, a heckler, which is what the paper calls her. But to my mind, a heckler is someone who disrupts a gathering to call attention to herself: and instead, drawing on immense courage, the kind associated with unique acts of valor, Medea stands up in hostile environments and makes it known that she objects to what’s going on. She does so on behalf of the human community, on behalf of those too fearful or disenfranchised to speak. She’s inventive, daring, and full of humor. In the last year alone, she delivered a list of victims of U.S. assassinations to the suburban home of the (astonished) CIA director, and put it in his hands; led a march in Pakistan’s tribal areas; crashed a cozy gathering of Congressional aides and drone manufacturers…. Like her direct predecessor in activism, Emma Goldman, she has a thing for dancing (at one gathering she wore a large [pink] notice saying “Do not disturb: dancing.”).

After recently completely six hours of interviews with her for a forthcoming book—during which she never mentioned her plans for the Obama speech; the likelihood is that it was a spur-of-the-moment thing—Medea comes across clearly in my mind’s eye. She can’t be taller than 5’5”. She sits across the table from me under a bright light. Her gaze is steady; her hands are set precisely parallel to one another, palms flat on table—and her mouth is closed in a thin, determined line.
— John Oakes

Besides founders and publishers Valerie Merians and Dennis Johnson, Burdick is the senior employee at Melville House.

“I remember his first day with us,” Johnson said. “He volunteered to help us at an event we were staging in the Great Hall at Cooper Union—an ‘anti-inauguration’ on the day of George Bush’s second inauguration.
